Television Advert: Skills Profile

Skill Profile

Skills: After being introduced to our new assignment; Creating a television advert, we have gone on to creating our initial idea & also being introduced to a treatment document, whereby you state what occurs within each scene & shot of your initial idea. I  studied media at GCSE & Sixth Form AS, where in Sixth Form, I created a 1 minute preview into a 'new horror', where I learnt camera shots & angles e.g., long shot, close up, panning etc, MISE EN SCENE of a, the use of sound e.g. speaking into a recorder & editing that on to a movie.

I also used Windows Movie Maker, whereby I imported my 1 minute film, & edited by adding sound effects etc, smashing, screaming etc. I also edited the effect on each shot, by adding filters such as sepia, which I used to create a darker, older effect. Within GCSE, I also made short clips for exercises within classes to familiarise with the camera, e.g. a role play. I also have Movie Maker at home, which I haven't used for videos, but created a short piece of a montage/collection of images perceived like a PowerPoint, added with texts & music for school friends, which gave me the skill of cutting the sound & putting specific sounds to a certain image. I've learn the skill to combine music & images on Movie Maker, which has the similar process as when I edited shots with music at Sixth Form, with cutting the music and adding sound effects on a timeline by different shots.

Throughout Sixth Form, we analysed a number of television programmes such as; Doctor Who, to indicate the specific camera angles & shot used & the purpose, the use of sound, how the programme has been edited by special effects, MISE EN SCENE. Through my experience, I gained a number of skills in areas such as camera angles, MISE EN SCENE which I feel confident with, which will help me when creating my television advert and the pre-production process. Through experience in Sixth Form, I used a Tripod on a number of occasions, where I familiarized myself with the movement of the Tripod with limitations for example, you can’t pan a long extension, you have to move the camera first to gain a wider angle of background field. The use of Tripod can sustain a still shot, which is useful when having a steady hand can make the footage appear confusing & messy.

I also gained the skill of Animation production through sixth form, as a professional animation designer came in & introduced us to the use of animation, by taking a number of still shots of an object but however changing the object in between shots, when playing back can appear as if the object is moving. In a group effort, we produced a short piece relating to the World cup with an chosen accompanied music of ‘waving flag’ which was about the World cup. Through this experience I have the skill to create animation, which can help me with the development of my work, if I decide to add animation to make my advert seem more complex and effective.

Another skill I obtain is group wok, also the ability to voice my opinion and listen to others carefully. I have the skill of being confident when talking to people which will help me when working within a group as I can voice my ideas & my input, also allowing other group members to talk is beneficial as they won’t feel under pressure and will air their choice to decisions. This is also useful as with conflicts all group members can feel comfortable to disagree some ideas, which is positive as all group members are distributing.

Researching is a skill within media, as it’s so important in the process of pre-production, as it’s the footing step to the production. Ideas & development are outcomes from the research which could make the final idea successfully. Research methods such as the Internet, Books are useful sources & also primary research whereby in our group, on pre-production we could potentially create a Quantitative & Quantitative Questionnaire, to ask the audience what they feel about our Initial Idea, this could enhance the quality of our work, as they could develop from our ideas.

Targets: Throughout this project I would like to extend my knowledge on filming & editing furthermore, & being introduced to Premiere Pro, I'd like to familiarise myself with this programme & learn more editing techniques as this can help with the editing side of production, which can hopefully gain a successful appearing television advert. I hope to also gain more knowledge on the use of camera angles/shots & really push myself within creating my Television Advertisement & achieve the best I can, gaining more knowledge on camera angles/ shots & experimenting with them, can enhance the quality of my work by perceiving it more interesting with a collective number of camera angles/ shots rather then simple, basic with few long shots.
